eSIM at Scarlet: what you need to know

Handy but not yet essential.

What is an eSIM or digital SIM card?

An eSIM is basically a SIM card but without the physical card. It’s a digital version, built directly into your device, unlike the classic SIM you insert manually.

To activate it, you usually receive a QR code or a download link and within minutes, your mobile plan is ready to go.

The benefits of using an eSIM in Belgium

It’s a promising tech upgrade with its pros and cons.

A simpler mobile experience

No more hunting for a needle or paperclip to open your SIM tray. And no more tiny plastic cards to lose when you change phones.

Activate your SIM in no time

No need to wait for a physical SIM to arrive. With an eSIM, everything happens online. Just scan the QR code and your profile is installed, quick and easy.

Manage multiple numbers on one smartphone

An eSIM lets you use more than one number on the same device. Some smartphones can store several eSIM profiles, handy if you want to separate work and personal numbers.

The downsides of eSIM in Belgium

Still a niche technology

For now, eSIM is still a niche product. It sparks interest and curiosity, but has not yet become mainstream among the general public. Most users remain loyal to the familiar physical SIM card, which has already proven its usefulness.

Limited compatibility

Even though the eSIM is gaining popularity, it is not yet compatible with all smartphones. In fact, only some recent and rather high-end models incorporate this technology. If you have an entry-level or mid-range device, it is highly likely that it does not yet support the eSIM.

What’s Scarlet’s position on eSIM?

Does Scarlet currently offer eSIM?

Not yet but we’re keeping a close eye on how this tech evolves.

Why?

Because we focus on offering services that make sense for everyone. Today, eSIM remains a technology with limited adoption, although usage is gradually increasing. Globally, fewer than 30% of mobile users currently use an eSIM. We’d rather keep things simple than push a feature that benefits only a small group and that doesn’t match our promise: a fair price for the essentials.

Will Scarlet offer eSIM in the future?

Probably yes. At Scarlet we keep a close eye on the evolution of mobile market trends.

Our priority is to offer solutions that make sense for our customers and for all Belgian consumers. Not to offer "trendy" options reserved for a handful of technophiles. When the eSIM truly becomes a utility and is used by the majority of mobile users in Belgium, we will adapt!

What mobile plans does Scarlet offer?

Although we do not yet offer eSIM, our physical SIM cards allow you to surf, call and send SMS. Basically the same thing as with an eSIM!
